Gemfibrozil

A lipid-lowering tablet for very high triglycerides and reducing heart disease risk in selected patients.

Clinical information

Common uses

very high triglycerides with risk of pancreatitis
reducing coronary heart disease risk in selected patients

Common side effects

indigestion (dyspepsia)
stomach pain
diarrhoea
nausea or vomiting
fatigue

Cautions

gallstone risk — stopped if gallstones found
muscle damage risk, especially with statins — report muscle pain
not with liver disease, severe kidney disease or gallbladder disease
must not be combined with simvastatin, repaglinide, dasabuvir or selexipag

Interactions

simvastatin (contraindicated — severe muscle damage risk)
repaglinide (contraindicated)
warfarin (blood thinner) — dose reduced, clotting monitored
statins generally (rhabdomyolysis risk)
CYP2C8 substrate drugs (levels rise)
OATP1B1 substrate drugs, e.g. rosuvastatin (dose reduction may be needed)
