Gemcitamide

Injected chemotherapy for several solid cancers.

Clinical information

Common uses

advanced ovarian cancer (with carboplatin)
metastatic breast cancer (with paclitaxel)
non-small cell lung cancer (with cisplatin)
pancreatic cancer (alone)

Common side effects

feeling sick or vomiting
anaemia, low white cells and platelets
raised liver enzymes
fever, rash, breathlessness
protein or blood in urine, swelling

Cautions

severely lowers blood counts — checked each cycle
can cause severe lung, kidney or liver toxicity
life-threatening skin reactions — stop permanently if they occur
severe toxicity if given close to radiation therapy

Interactions

radiation therapy (severe toxicity within 7 days)

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the baby; use contraception
