A gadolinium contrast agent injected before MRI scans to improve images of the brain, breast, vessels and heart.

Clinical information

Common uses

MRI of the central nervous system
breast MRI to assess cancer
MR angiography of supra-aortic or renal arteries
cardiac MRI in suspected coronary artery disease

Common side effects

headache
nausea
dizziness

Cautions

boxed warning: nephrogenic systemic fibrosis risk with poor kidney function
not for injection into the spine (intrathecal)
allergic reactions, rarely severe, can occur
gadolinium stays in brain, bone and organs for months or years

Pregnancy: only if the scan is essential and cannot be delayed
