Gabapentin

A medicine for epilepsy and nerve pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • epilepsy
  • nerve pain from diabetes, shingles or injury

Common side effects

  • feeling sleepy, tired or dizzy
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • swollen arms and legs
  • weight gain

Cautions

  • can be addictive — reduce gradually, never stop suddenly
  • may not suit breathing problems such as COPD or severe asthma
  • tell your doctor if you have misused medicines before
  • seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm

Interactions

  • antacids (take 2 hours apart)
  • strong painkillers such as morphine (more drowsiness)
  • antidepressants such as amitriptyline or fluoxetine
  • antipsychotics such as olanzapine
