Frusemide/ Furosemide

A diuretic (water tablet) that treats fluid build-up and high blood pressure.

Clinical information

Common uses

oedema from heart failure, kidney or liver disease
high blood pressure

Common side effects

peeing more than usual
thirst and dry mouth
dizziness
headaches
muscle twitches

Cautions

may not suit kidney or liver problems, diabetes, gout or low blood pressure
dehydration risk — care if vomiting, diarrhoea or fever
regular blood tests with long-term use
avoid alcohol — dizziness and dehydration

Interactions

other blood pressure medicines, e.g. beta blockers, ACE inhibitors
heart rhythm medicines such as digoxin and amiodarone
NSAIDs
lithium (mental health medicine)
antidepressants such as amitriptyline and sertraline
laxatives and potassium-raising medicines
