Fondaparinux Sodium

An anticoagulant injection that prevents and treats blood clots, mainly around surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • prevent deep vein thrombosis after hip, knee or abdominal surgery
  • treat deep vein thrombosis (with warfarin)
  • treat acute pulmonary embolism (with warfarin)

Common side effects

  • bleeding complications
  • anaemia
  • injection site bleeding, rash or itching
  • trouble sleeping
  • low potassium

Cautions

  • boxed warning: spinal or epidural bleeds with spinal procedures — paralysis risk
  • not for severe kidney impairment, active major bleeding or body weight under 50 kg
  • blood counts, kidney tests and stool blood tests monitored
  • needle guard contains dry natural rubber — latex allergy caution

Interactions

  • other drugs that raise bleeding risk (NSAIDs, platelet inhibitors, anticoagulants) — stop unless essential

Pregnancy: no clear harm reported — used with close monitoring
