Follitropin alfa

An injectable follicle-stimulating hormone used to treat infertility in women and men.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • induce ovulation in infertile women
  • develop multiple follicles in IVF/ART cycles
  • induce sperm production in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism

Common side effects

  • ovarian cysts
  • headache
  • abdominal or pelvic pain
  • nausea
  • acne and injection site pain (in men)

Cautions

  • ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can be serious
  • risk of blood clots and ovarian torsion
  • multiple pregnancies are more likely
  • not with primary gonadal failure or certain hormone-dependent tumours
