Fluvoxamine Maleate

An SSRI antidepressant capsule used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

Common side effects

  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • sleepiness or trouble sleeping
  • weakness
  • diarrhoea
  • sweating, tremor and sexual problems

Cautions

  • watch for worsening mood or suicidal thoughts, especially early on
  • serotonin syndrome risk, especially with other serotonergic drugs
  • may increase bleeding risk
  • do not stop abruptly — reduce gradually

Interactions

  • thioridazine, tizanidine, pimozide, alosetron, ramelteon (must not combine)
  • MAOIs (do not use within 14 days)
  • benzodiazepines such as alprazolam or diazepam (levels rise)
  • warfarin (blood thinner) — levels rise, monitor clotting
  • theophylline (dose cut to one-third)
  • clozapine and methadone (levels rise)

Pregnancy: weigh risks and benefits — use late in pregnancy can affect the newborn
