Fluticasone Propionate + Salmeterol

A combined steroid and long-acting bronchodilator inhaler for asthma and COPD.

Clinical information

Common uses

asthma, twice daily (age 4+)
maintenance treatment of COPD and reducing flare-ups

Common side effects

upper airway infection or inflammation
throat irritation and hoarse voice
oral thrush
headaches
pneumonia (in COPD patients)

Cautions

not for sudden breathing problems or asthma attacks
never combine with another LABA-containing medicine
raised pneumonia risk in COPD — watch for symptoms
rinse mouth after use; long-term use can affect bones, eyes and growth

Interactions

strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, e.g. ritonavir, ketoconazole (not recommended)
MAOIs and tricyclic antidepressants (extreme caution)
beta blockers (may cause severe bronchospasm)
non-potassium-sparing diuretics (low potassium risk)
