Fluoxetine

An SSRI antidepressant for depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and bulimia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • depression
  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • bulimia
  • sometimes menopause symptoms

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea or constipation
  • problems sleeping
  • feeling dizzy or drowsy

Cautions

  • may not suit epilepsy, diabetes, heart disease, glaucoma or bleeding disorders
  • watch for serotonin syndrome — fast heartbeat, sweating, confusion
  • seek urgent help for thoughts of self-harm
  • do not stop suddenly — dose is reduced gradually

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants such as moclobemide or selegiline
  • tamoxifen (breast cancer medicine)
  • warfarin and apixaban (anticoagulants)
  • NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen
  • buprenorphine (opioid painkiller)
  • St John's wort (do not use)

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest dose, extra monitoring
