Fluorouracil

A chemotherapy injection for cancers of the colon, rectum, breast, stomach and pancreas.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • colon and rectal cancer
  • breast cancer
  • stomach (gastric) cancer
  • pancreatic cancer

Cautions

  • boxed warning: DPD enzyme deficiency can cause fatal toxicity — genetic testing advised
  • can harm the heart — chest pain, rhythm problems, heart failure
  • severe diarrhoea, mouth sores, hand-foot syndrome and low blood counts
  • can harm an unborn baby

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner) — clotting values rise, close INR monitoring

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm the unborn baby
