Fluorescein Sodium

A dye injected into a vein to image the blood vessels of the retina and iris during eye examinations.

Clinical information

Common uses

fluorescein angiography or angioscopy of the retina and iris

Common side effects

temporary skin discolouration
urine discolouration
nausea and vomiting
stomach upset

Cautions

severe tissue damage if it leaks outside the vein during injection
breathing reactions may need treatment
nausea or vomiting can occur within minutes of injection
