Flumazenil

An injection that reverses the sedative effects of benzodiazepines after procedures or overdose.

Clinical information

Common uses

reverse benzodiazepine sedation after anaesthesia or procedures
manage benzodiazepine overdose
reverse conscious sedation in children

Common side effects

dizziness
injection site pain
increased sweating
headache
nausea and vomiting

Cautions

can trigger seizures, especially with benzodiazepine dependence or mixed overdose
not for serious cyclic antidepressant poisoning
sedation can return — monitoring for up to 120 minutes
does not reliably reverse slowed breathing

Interactions

cyclic antidepressants in overdose (seizure and heart rhythm risk)
