Flumazenil

An injection that reverses the sedative effects of benzodiazepines after procedures or overdose.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • reverse benzodiazepine sedation after anaesthesia or procedures
  • manage benzodiazepine overdose
  • reverse conscious sedation in children

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • injection site pain
  • increased sweating
  • headache
  • nausea and vomiting

Cautions

  • can trigger seizures, especially with benzodiazepine dependence or mixed overdose
  • not for serious cyclic antidepressant poisoning
  • sedation can return — monitoring for up to 120 minutes
  • does not reliably reverse slowed breathing

Interactions

  • cyclic antidepressants in overdose (seizure and heart rhythm risk)
