Fluconazole

An antifungal medicine that treats thrush and other fungal infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • vaginal thrush, oral thrush and balanitis
  • candida infections in the blood or body
  • cryptococcal meningitis
  • preventing fungal infections in people at risk

Common side effects

  • headache
  • stomach pain
  • diarrhoea
  • feeling or being sick
  • rash

Cautions

  • tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems
  • tell your doctor about kidney or liver problems
  • not suitable in acute porphyria
  • tell your doctor about abnormal potassium, calcium or magnesium levels

Interactions

  • warfarin, dabigatran or clopidogrel (blood clot medicines)
  • statins (cholesterol medicines)
  • carbamazepine (epilepsy medicine)
  • erythromycin or clarithromycin (antibiotics)
  • amiodarone (heart medicine)
  • pimozide, quetiapine and similar mental health medicines
