Flucloxacillin

A penicillin antibiotic that treats skin, wound, bone and ear infections.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • skin and wound infections
  • bone infections (osteomyelitis)
  • ear infections

Common side effects

  • feeling or being sick
  • diarrhoea
  • bloating and indigestion

Cautions

  • not suitable if allergic to penicillin
  • tell your doctor about liver or kidney problems
  • take on an empty stomach
  • rare liver problems can appear up to 2 months after finishing

Interactions

  • methotrexate (arthritis medicine)
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • gout medicines probenecid and sulfinpyrazone
  • voriconazole (antifungal)
  • other antibiotics
  • oral typhoid vaccine (made less effective)

Pregnancy: safe to take in pregnancy
