Filgrastim (G-Csf)

A white blood cell growth factor that cuts infection risk during chemotherapy and treats severe neutropenia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • prevent infection with fever during chemotherapy
  • speed white cell recovery in leukaemia and bone marrow transplant
  • mobilise blood stem cells for collection
  • severe chronic neutropenia and acute radiation exposure

Common side effects

  • fever
  • pain, including bone pain
  • rash
  • cough
  • headache

Cautions

  • spleen can rupture — report left upper belly or shoulder pain
  • serious allergic reactions — treatment stopped permanently if they occur
  • can trigger sickle cell crisis in sickle cell disorders
  • report fever with breathing difficulty (possible ARDS)
