Fentanyl

A strong opioid painkiller for severe pain, as patches, tablets, sprays or injections.

Clinical information

Common uses

severe pain during or after surgery or injury
cancer pain
long-term pain when weaker painkillers stop working

Common side effects

constipation
feeling or being sick
feeling sleepy or tired
dizziness
headaches

Cautions

can be addictive — use exactly as prescribed
do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms
keep patches from heat and children — overdose can be fatal
avoid alcohol, especially when starting

Interactions

codeine-containing painkillers (do not take together)
sleeping medicines
antidepressants and other mental health medicines
seizure medicines
medicines for infections including HIV
grapefruit juice (raises fentanyl levels)

Pregnancy: occasionally used for severe pain — baby may have withdrawal symptoms
