Fenofibrate

A tablet that lowers cholesterol and triglycerides alongside diet changes.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high cholesterol and mixed dyslipidaemia
  • severe high triglycerides

Common side effects

  • abnormal liver tests
  • raised liver enzymes
  • raised muscle enzyme (CPK)
  • stuffy or runny nose

Cautions

  • serious liver injury reported — liver tests monitored
  • muscle damage risk, higher when combined with a statin
  • can cause gallstones
  • not with severe kidney disease, liver disease or gallbladder disease

Interactions

  • warfarin-type blood thinners (bleeding risk — dose adjusted)
  • statins (muscle damage risk)
  • immunosuppressants
  • bile acid resins (separate doses)
