Febuxostat

A tablet that lowers uric acid to manage gout when allopurinol is unsuitable.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • chronic gout when allopurinol fails or cannot be used

Common side effects

  • liver test abnormalities
  • nausea
  • joint pain
  • rash

Cautions

  • higher rate of heart-related death than allopurinol in heart disease
  • gout flares often increase when starting — preventive treatment may help
  • liver failure reported — stop if liver injury develops
  • serious skin reactions possible

Interactions

  • azathioprine (do not combine)
  • mercaptopurine (do not combine)
