Famotidine

An H2 blocker tablet that reduces stomach acid to treat ulcers and reflux.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • duodenal and stomach ulcers
  • reflux disease (GERD) and erosive oesophagitis
  • excess acid conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • constipation
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • confusion and other brain effects in elderly or kidney-impaired — dose reduced
  • relief of symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer

Interactions

  • drugs needing stomach acid to absorb (may work less well)
  • tizanidine (avoid — low blood pressure, drowsiness)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
