Famotidine

An H2 blocker tablet that reduces stomach acid to treat ulcers and reflux.

Clinical information

Common uses

duodenal and stomach ulcers
reflux disease (GERD) and erosive oesophagitis
excess acid conditions like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

Common side effects

headache
dizziness
constipation
diarrhoea

Cautions

confusion and other brain effects in elderly or kidney-impaired — dose reduced
relief of symptoms does not rule out stomach cancer

Interactions

drugs needing stomach acid to absorb (may work less well)
tizanidine (avoid — low blood pressure, drowsiness)

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed
