Human factor VIII concentrate replaces the missing clotting factor to prevent and control bleeding in haemophilia A.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • prevention and control of bleeding episodes in haemophilia A

Common side effects

  • development of factor VIII inhibitors (neutralising antibodies)
  • dizziness and headache
  • fever and infusion-site inflammation

Cautions

  • allergic reactions including anaphylaxis can occur
  • made from human blood — very small risk of transmitting infections
  • not for von Willebrand's disease
  • inhibitors can make treatment less effective

Pregnancy: only if clearly needed — safety not established
