Ezetimibe

A tablet that lowers cholesterol by blocking its absorption from food.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood cholesterol
  • when statins are unsuitable or insufficient

Common side effects

  • stomach pain
  • diarrhoea
  • farting more than usual
  • feeling more tired than usual

Cautions

  • may not suit people with liver problems
  • rarely causes muscle pain or weakness — report it
  • treatment is usually lifelong — do not stop without advice

Interactions

  • ciclosporin
  • warfarin and similar blood thinners
  • other cholesterol medicines like colestyramine or bezafibrate

Pregnancy: not usually recommended — specialists may prescribe it
