Common uses

high blood cholesterol
when statins are unsuitable or insufficient

Common side effects

stomach pain
diarrhoea
farting more than usual
feeling more tired than usual

Cautions

may not suit people with liver problems
rarely causes muscle pain or weakness — report it
treatment is usually lifelong — do not stop without advice

Interactions

ciclosporin
warfarin and similar blood thinners
other cholesterol medicines like colestyramine or bezafibrate

Pregnancy: not usually recommended — specialists may prescribe it
