Etonogestrel

A hormonal contraceptive implant placed under the skin of the arm to prevent pregnancy for up to 5 years.

Clinical information

Common uses

long-acting contraception, up to 5 years

Common side effects

changes in menstrual bleeding pattern
headache
weight gain
acne
breast pain or stomach pain

Cautions

must be inserted and removed by a trained professional (boxed warning)
removed if a blood clot, jaundice or uncontrolled high blood pressure develops
not for people with breast cancer, liver disease or a history of blood clots
watch for ectopic pregnancy if pregnancy occurs

Interactions

enzyme-inducing medicines and herbal products (CYP3A4 inducers) — may reduce effectiveness

Pregnancy: not for use in pregnancy — implant removed if pregnancy continues
