Escitalopram

An SSRI antidepressant used to treat depression and anxiety disorders.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • depression
  • obsessive compulsive disorder
  • generalised and social anxiety disorder
  • panic disorder

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling sick
  • sweating
  • problems sleeping
  • sexual problems such as low sex drive

Cautions

  • do not stop suddenly — dose reduced gradually
  • may not suit heart rhythm problems, bleeding disorders or epilepsy
  • rarely causes serotonin syndrome or suicidal thoughts — seek help
  • best to avoid alcohol

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants (moclobemide, selegiline)
  • heart rhythm medicines
  • warfarin and other anticoagulants
  • anti-inflammatory painkillers (aspirin, ibuprofen)
  • stomach ulcer medicines
  • St John's wort

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
