Clinical information

Common uses

depression
obsessive compulsive disorder
generalised and social anxiety disorder
panic disorder

Common side effects

headaches
feeling sick
sweating
problems sleeping
sexual problems such as low sex drive

Cautions

do not stop suddenly — dose reduced gradually
may not suit heart rhythm problems, bleeding disorders or epilepsy
rarely causes serotonin syndrome or suicidal thoughts — seek help
best to avoid alcohol

Interactions

MAOI antidepressants (moclobemide, selegiline)
heart rhythm medicines
warfarin and other anticoagulants
anti-inflammatory painkillers (aspirin, ibuprofen)
stomach ulcer medicines
St John's wort

Pregnancy: can be used if needed — lowest effective dose
