Erythropoeitin

Injected hormone that stimulates red blood cell production.

Clinical information

Common uses

anaemia of chronic kidney disease
anaemia from zidovudine in HIV
anaemia from myelosuppressive chemotherapy
reducing transfusions around some elective surgery

Cautions

raises risk of death, heart attack, stroke and blood clots
can worsen or shorten survival in some cancers
blood pressure must be controlled; seizure risk in kidney disease
multi-dose vials (benzyl alcohol) not for infants or pregnancy

Pregnancy: multi-dose vials contraindicated — preservative risk
