Injection that stops platelets clumping, used during heart attack care.

Clinical information

Common uses

acute coronary syndrome
patients having artery-opening procedures (PCI, stents)

Common side effects

bleeding
low blood pressure

Cautions

can cause serious bleeding — stopped if bleeding uncontrolled
not after recent bleeding, stroke, or major surgery
not with severe uncontrolled blood pressure
not for people on kidney dialysis

Interactions

other antiplatelet drugs (more bleeding)
clot-busting drugs (thrombolytics)
heparin and aspirin (more bleeding)
long-term anti-inflammatory painkillers (NSAIDs)
other GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors (avoid)
