Epoetin Alfa ( Recombiant Human Erythropoietin )

Injection that stimulates red blood cell production to treat anaemia.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • anaemia from chronic kidney disease
  • anaemia from cancer chemotherapy
  • anaemia from zidovudine in HIV
  • reducing transfusions in some surgery

Common side effects

  • high blood pressure
  • joint pain
  • muscle spasm
  • fever
  • dizziness

Cautions

  • raises risk of death, heart attack, stroke and blood clots
  • can speed tumour growth in some cancers
  • blood pressure must be controlled before and during treatment
  • raises seizure risk in kidney disease

Pregnancy: multi-dose vials contraindicated — only preservative-free form if needed
