Chemotherapy injection (anthracycline) given after breast cancer surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

breast cancer treatment after surgery, when lymph nodes are involved

Common side effects

low blood cell counts
feeling or being sick
mouth sores
hair loss
diarrhoea

Cautions

can damage the heart — heart function checked regularly
raises risk of later leukaemia
severe tissue damage if it leaks from the vein
severe bone marrow suppression can cause serious infection

Interactions

other heart-toxic cancer drugs (avoid)
cimetidine (stop during treatment)

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
