Epirubicin

Chemotherapy injection (anthracycline) given after breast cancer surgery.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • breast cancer treatment after surgery, when lymph nodes are involved

Common side effects

  • low blood cell counts
  • feeling or being sick
  • mouth sores
  • hair loss
  • diarrhoea

Cautions

  • can damage the heart — heart function checked regularly
  • raises risk of later leukaemia
  • severe tissue damage if it leaks from the vein
  • severe bone marrow suppression can cause serious infection

Interactions

  • other heart-toxic cancer drugs (avoid)
  • cimetidine (stop during treatment)

Pregnancy: avoid — can harm an unborn baby
