Common uses

chronic hepatitis B in adults
children 2 years and older with active infection

Common side effects

headache
tiredness
dizziness
feeling sick

Cautions

hepatitis can flare badly after stopping — liver monitored for months
not recommended with HIV unless also on HIV treatment
risk of lactic acidosis and severe liver problems

Interactions

drugs that reduce kidney function or compete for kidney elimination

Pregnancy: safety not established — outcomes tracked in a pregnancy registry
