Enoxaparin

Enoxaparin (Lovenox) is a low molecular weight heparin injection to prevent and treat blood clots.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing deep vein thrombosis after surgery or illness
treating DVT with or without pulmonary embolism
unstable angina and heart attack

Common side effects

bleeding
anemia and low platelets
bruising (ecchymosis)
raised liver enzymes
diarrhoea, nausea, fever or swelling

Cautions

boxed warning: spinal/epidural hematomas with spinal procedures — paralysis risk
not with active major bleeding
not with recent heparin-induced thrombocytopenia
do not interchange with heparin or other LMWHs

Interactions

other anticoagulants
aspirin, salicylates and other platelet inhibitors
NSAIDs including ketorolac
dipyridamole and sulfinpyrazone

Pregnancy: no increased risk of birth defects seen; preservative-free form preferred
