Enalapril

Enalapril is an ACE inhibitor for high blood pressure and heart failure.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • heart failure

Common side effects

  • dizziness, especially standing up quickly
  • a dry cough
  • headaches
  • blurred vision
  • taste changes, nausea or diarrhoea

Cautions

  • may not suit kidney or liver problems
  • angioedema (swelling of lips, tongue, face) is a serious risk
  • dehydration risk if vomiting, diarrhoea or fever
  • limit alcohol — low blood pressure risk

Interactions

  • diuretics such as furosemide
  • painkillers such as ibuprofen and aspirin
  • lithium
  • tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline
  • antivirals such as aciclovir
  • antibiotics such as cefalexin

Pregnancy: not usually used — can affect how the baby develops
