Eltrombopag raises platelet counts in immune thrombocytopenia, hepatitis C and severe aplastic anemia.

Clinical information

Common uses

chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
low platelets in chronic hepatitis C
severe aplastic anemia

Common side effects

anemia
nausea and diarrhoea
fever
raised liver enzymes
cough, fatigue and headache

Cautions

boxed warning: liver decompensation with interferon/ribavirin in hepatitis C
boxed warning: severe liver toxicity — liver function monitored
blood clots including portal vein thrombosis
cataracts have been reported

Interactions

interferon and ribavirin (hepatic decompensation risk in hepatitis C)

Pregnancy: limited human data; animal studies showed harm — talk to your doctor
