A three-drug combination tablet (efavirenz, emtricitabine, tenofovir DF) that treats HIV-1 infection.

Clinical information

Common uses

HIV-1 infection as a complete regimen
HIV-1 infection with other antiretrovirals

Common side effects

diarrhoea and nausea
fatigue, headache and dizziness
depression and insomnia
abnormal dreams
rash

Cautions

boxed warning: hepatitis B can flare severely after stopping
serious psychiatric and nervous system symptoms can occur
kidney problems including acute renal failure
avoid pregnancy during use and 12 weeks after

Interactions

voriconazole (antifungal) — contraindicated
elbasvir/grazoprevir (hepatitis C drug) — contraindicated
lopinavir/ritonavir or darunavir/ritonavir (raise tenofovir levels)
atazanavir — not recommended
drugs that prolong the QT interval (heart rhythm risk)

Pregnancy: avoid — first-trimester use may harm the baby
