Duloxetine

Duloxetine is an SNRI antidepressant for depression, anxiety and nerve pain.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • depression and anxiety
  • nerve pain, including fibromyalgia
  • stress urinary incontinence in women

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling or being sick
  • feeling dizzy or drowsy
  • dry mouth
  • diarrhoea, constipation or sleep problems

Cautions

  • may not suit epilepsy, heart disease or glaucoma
  • do not stop suddenly — withdrawal symptoms possible
  • serious risks include serotonin syndrome and suicidal thoughts
  • best not to drink alcohol

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants such as moclobemide and selegiline
  • warfarin, apixaban, clopidogrel (bleeding risk)
  • NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen
  • St John's wort — do not use
