Doxycycline

Doxycycline is an antibiotic for bacterial infections and malaria prevention.

Clinical information

Common uses

bacterial infections (chest, urine, gum, sexually transmitted)
acne and rosacea
malaria prevention while travelling

Common side effects

headaches
feeling sick (nausea) and being sick (vomiting)
a rash

Cautions

not usually for children under 12 — affects tooth development
skin can become more sensitive to the sun
may not suit liver or kidney problems, lupus or myasthenia gravis
not usually used in pregnancy or breastfeeding

Interactions

warfarin and other anticoagulants (blood thinners)
antacids and other indigestion treatments
acne medicines
iron or zinc supplements
alcohol (can stop it working properly)

Pregnancy: not usually used — can affect the baby's tooth development
