Doxycycline

Doxycycline is an antibiotic for bacterial infections and malaria prevention.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • bacterial infections (chest, urine, gum, sexually transmitted)
  • acne and rosacea
  • malaria prevention while travelling

Common side effects

  • headaches
  • feeling sick (nausea) and being sick (vomiting)
  • a rash

Cautions

  • not usually for children under 12 — affects tooth development
  • skin can become more sensitive to the sun
  • may not suit liver or kidney problems, lupus or myasthenia gravis
  • not usually used in pregnancy or breastfeeding

Interactions

  • warfarin and other anticoagulants (blood thinners)
  • antacids and other indigestion treatments
  • acne medicines
  • iron or zinc supplements
  • alcohol (can stop it working properly)

Pregnancy: not usually used — can affect the baby's tooth development
