Doxepin tablets treat insomnia where people have trouble staying asleep.

Clinical information

Common uses

insomnia with difficulty staying asleep

Common side effects

sleepiness or sedation
nausea
upper respiratory tract infection

Cautions

do not use within 2 weeks of MAOI antidepressants
not with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma or severe urinary retention
can impair alertness — avoid driving after taking
may worsen depression or suicidal thinking

Interactions

MAOI antidepressants — do not combine
cimetidine (raises doxepin levels)
alcohol (increases sedation) — do not use together
sedating antihistamines and other CNS depressants
tolazamide (severe low blood sugar reported)

Pregnancy: late-pregnancy use may affect the newborn — only if prescribed
