Doxepin Hcl

Doxepin tablets treat insomnia where people have trouble staying asleep.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • insomnia with difficulty staying asleep

Common side effects

  • sleepiness or sedation
  • nausea
  • upper respiratory tract infection

Cautions

  • do not use within 2 weeks of MAOI antidepressants
  • not with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma or severe urinary retention
  • can impair alertness — avoid driving after taking
  • may worsen depression or suicidal thinking

Interactions

  • MAOI antidepressants — do not combine
  • cimetidine (raises doxepin levels)
  • alcohol (increases sedation) — do not use together
  • sedating antihistamines and other CNS depressants
  • tolazamide (severe low blood sugar reported)

Pregnancy: late-pregnancy use may affect the newborn — only if prescribed
