Dopamine

Dopamine is an intravenous infusion used in intensive care to support blood pressure and circulation in shock.

Clinical information

Common uses

improving haemodynamic status in shock

Common side effects

local vasoconstriction from leakage at the drip site (most common)
fast or irregular heartbeats and palpitations
nausea and vomiting
headache and anxiety

Cautions

not for people with phaeochromocytoma
leakage into tissue can cause tissue death — given into a large vein
fluid volume, acidosis and oxygen corrected before use
stopping suddenly can drop blood pressure

Interactions

MAO inhibitors (start at one-tenth of the dose)
halogenated anaesthetic gases (arrhythmia risk)
tricyclic antidepressants
other vasopressors such as noradrenaline or oxytocin (severe hypertension)
