Docusate Sodium

Docusate is a laxative that softens poo to treat constipation.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • constipation
  • softening poo with piles or an anal fissure
  • emptying bowels before a stomach x-ray

Common side effects

  • feeling sick (nausea)
  • diarrhoea
  • stomach cramps
  • burning or pain around the bottom (enema)
  • burning feeling in mouth and throat (liquid)

Cautions

  • do not take for more than 5 days unless prescribed
  • do not use the enema with piles or an anal fissure
  • not for children under 12 unless prescribed or recommended
  • avoid with a gut blockage, stomach pain or recent vomiting

Interactions

  • mineral oil laxatives such as liquid paraffin (do not combine)

Pregnancy: occasionally used; other laxatives usually tried first
