Dobutamine Hydrochloride

Dobutamine is an intravenous heart stimulant for short-term support in cardiac decompensation.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • short-term inotropic support in cardiac decompensation
  • depressed heart contractility after cardiac surgery or heart disease

Cautions

  • not for idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis
  • contains dextrose — unsuitable with corn allergy
  • not shown safe or effective for long-term heart failure
  • safety after heart attack not established

Interactions

  • nitroprusside (higher cardiac output when combined)
  • no interactions seen with digitalis, furosemide, lidocaine and others tested

Pregnancy: only if expected benefits clearly outweigh risks
