Adacel is a booster vaccine against tetanus, diphtheria and whooping cough (pertussis).

Clinical information

Common uses

booster against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (ages 10 to 64)
third-trimester vaccination to protect newborns from pertussis

Common side effects

injection site pain, swelling or redness
headache
body ache or muscle weakness
tiredness

Cautions

not after severe allergic reaction to a previous dose
not after encephalopathy within 7 days of a pertussis vaccine
defer if progressive or unstable neurological condition
fainting can occur after injection

Interactions

influenza vaccine (lower response to one pertussis antigen)
immunosuppressive therapies (may reduce vaccine response)
do not mix with other vaccines in the same syringe

Pregnancy: given in the third trimester; no evidence of harm to the baby
