Diphtheria toxoid+ tetanus toxoid

A combined tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccine for people aged 7 years and older, including boosters.

Clinical information

Common uses

preventing tetanus and diphtheria (age 7 and older)
routine boosters every 10 years
wound management and post-exposure protection

Common side effects

injection-site pain
headache
injection-site redness and swelling
malaise and muscle weakness
joint pain

Cautions

not given after a severe allergic reaction to a previous tetanus or diphtheria vaccine
fainting can occur after vaccination
more frequent doses than recommended increase reactions
caution if Guillain-Barré syndrome followed a previous tetanus vaccine

Interactions

immunosuppressive treatments may reduce the response
tetanus immune globulin can be given at a separate site

Pregnancy: insufficient human data to establish a vaccine-associated risk
