A combined vaccine that protects infants and young children against diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough (pertussis).

Clinical information

Common uses

immunisation against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis
5-dose series from 6 weeks to 6 years of age

Common side effects

fussiness or irritability
inconsolable crying
decreased activity or sleepiness
injection-site tenderness, redness and swelling
fever

Cautions

not given after a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose
not given after unexplained encephalopathy within 7 days of a pertussis vaccine
caution with progressive neurological disorders
review needed if high fever, collapse or prolonged crying followed a previous dose

Interactions

immunosuppressive treatments may reduce the vaccine response
never mixed in the same syringe with other vaccines
