Clinical information

Common uses

ripening the cervix at or near term before labour induction

Common side effects

abnormal uterine contractions
stomach or gut upset
back pain
warm feeling in the vagina
fever

Cautions

hospital use only, with intensive care available
not after caesarean section or major uterine surgery
uterine rupture has been reported
serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis reported

Interactions

other oxytocic drugs (e.g. oxytocin) — wait 6 to 12 hours

Pregnancy: used at or near term to start labour — hospital only
