Prostaglandin gel used to soften the cervix before inducing labour.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • ripening the cervix at or near term before labour induction

Common side effects

  • abnormal uterine contractions
  • stomach or gut upset
  • back pain
  • warm feeling in the vagina
  • fever

Cautions

  • hospital use only, with intensive care available
  • not after caesarean section or major uterine surgery
  • uterine rupture has been reported
  • serious allergic reactions including anaphylaxis reported

Interactions

  • other oxytocic drugs (e.g. oxytocin) — wait 6 to 12 hours

Pregnancy: used at or near term to start labour — hospital only
