Digoxin

Clinical information

Common uses

irregular heartbeats including atrial fibrillation
heart failure symptoms, alongside other medicines

Common side effects

feeling dizzy
feeling or being sick
diarrhoea
changes in vision
skin rashes

Cautions

regular blood tests needed for kidneys, potassium, magnesium and calcium
more than 2 common side effects may mean too much digoxin
do not stop suddenly — condition can worsen
thyroid, kidney and bowel problems change how it works

Interactions

amiodarone, verapamil or diltiazem (heart medicines)
diuretics such as furosemide
antibiotics such as clarithromycin, erythromycin or rifampicin
NSAIDs such as ibuprofen or diclofenac
HIV medicines such as ritonavir
St John's wort (herbal remedy)

Pregnancy: can be taken under specialist supervision
