Dicyclomine

Antispasmodic tablet that relaxes gut muscle in irritable bowel syndrome.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • functional bowel / irritable bowel syndrome

Common side effects

  • dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • blurred vision
  • feeling sick
  • sleepiness

Cautions

  • reduces sweating — heat stroke possible in hot weather
  • can cause confusion or delirium, especially in older people
  • not with glaucoma, myasthenia gravis or gut/urinary blockage
  • not for babies under 6 months or breastfeeding mothers

Interactions

  • glaucoma eye medicines — effect opposed, eye pressure may rise
  • other anticholinergic medicines — side effects add up
  • antacids — reduce absorption, avoid taking together
