Diclofenac Diethylammonium

Anti-inflammatory painkiller (NSAID), used as a gel or patch for pain in a specific area.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • joint and muscle pain, applied to the painful area
  • arthritis, sprains and back pain

Common side effects

  • skin irritation or dryness where applied
  • itching or mild rash
  • increased sensitivity to sunlight

Cautions

  • side effects are less likely than tablets but still possible
  • stay out of strong sun and use high-factor sun cream
  • may not suit people with asthma, ulcers or heart failure
  • do not use gel more than 4 times in 24 hours

Interactions

  • other NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) — do not combine
  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • SSRI antidepressants
  • steroid medicines
  • diuretics such as furosemide
  • lithium and methotrexate

Pregnancy: not usually recommended in pregnancy
