Common uses
- low blood sugar from inoperable insulin-producing tumours
- low blood sugar from hyperinsulinism in infants and children
Common side effects
- salt and fluid retention
- excess body hair growth
- high blood sugar
- fast heartbeat or palpitations
- stomach upset and loss of appetite
Cautions
- fluid retention can trigger heart failure in at-risk patients
- ketoacidosis and hyperosmolar coma can develop rapidly
- pulmonary hypertension reported in babies — monitor breathing
- monitor urine glucose and ketones during treatment
Interactions
- thiazide diuretics — stronger blood sugar and uric acid effects
- phenytoin (diphenylhydantoin) — seizure control may be lost
- coumarin blood thinners — levels may rise
