Common uses

sedation of ventilated adults in intensive care
sedation before or during procedures
sedation of children for non-invasive procedures

Common side effects

low blood pressure
slow heart rate
dry mouth

Cautions

patients must be continuously monitored
can cause serious slow heartbeat, even sinus arrest
temporary high blood pressure during the loading dose
use beyond 24 hours may cause tolerance and more side effects

Interactions

anaesthetics, sedatives, sleeping medicines and opioids — effects add up
