Clinical information

Common uses

  • sedation of ventilated adults in intensive care
  • sedation before or during procedures
  • sedation of children for non-invasive procedures

Common side effects

  • low blood pressure
  • slow heart rate
  • dry mouth

Cautions

  • patients must be continuously monitored
  • can cause serious slow heartbeat, even sinus arrest
  • temporary high blood pressure during the loading dose
  • use beyond 24 hours may cause tolerance and more side effects

Interactions

  • anaesthetics, sedatives, sleeping medicines and opioids — effects add up
