Dexamethasone

A steroid (corticosteroid) taken as tablets or liquid to treat inflammation and many other conditions.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • severe skin conditions and severe allergies
  • sickness (nausea and vomiting)
  • croup and eye inflammation
  • autoimmune conditions such as lupus; severe COVID-19 in hospital

Common side effects

  • weight gain
  • indigestion
  • sleep problems
  • mild mood changes

Cautions

  • more likely to get infections — avoid contact with measles, chickenpox or shingles
  • do not stop suddenly — dose is reduced gradually
  • carry a steroid card on longer courses or higher doses
  • tell your doctor if you have diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure or a

Interactions

  • warfarin (blood thinner)
  • diuretics (water tablets)
  • rifampicin or rifabutin (antibiotics) and antifungal medicines
  • epilepsy medicines (phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbitone)
  • NSAIDs such as high-dose aspirin, ibuprofen or diclofenac
  • HIV medicines and recent or upcoming vaccinations
