Corticosteroid used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy from age 2.

Clinical information

Common uses

  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy

Common side effects

  • round (Cushingoid) face appearance
  • weight gain
  • increased appetite
  • cough and colds
  • excess hair growth

Cautions

  • weakens the immune system — infections can be severe and masked
  • can cause hormone problems, high blood sugar and mood changes
  • long-term use can thin bones and cause eye problems
  • no live vaccines while on high doses

Interactions

  • moderate or strong CYP3A4 inhibitors — dose must be reduced
  • CYP3A4 inducers — avoid, may reduce effect
